Assessment of Depression among Elderly Population at Tertiary Care Hospital of Wardha District
Abstract
Background: The elderly population is increasing rapidly globally, and presently, India has the second largest number of
elderly persons. The population of the elderly has shown an increase from just 5.6 per cent in 1961 to 7.7 per cent in
2001.The World Health Organization estimated that the overall prevalence rate of depressive disorders among the elderly
generally varies between 10 and 20%, depending on the cultural situations.The community-based mental health studies in
India have revealed that the point prevalence of depressive disorders in elderly Indian population varies between 13% and
25%. Although India is the second-most populated country in the world, in terms of elderly population of 60 years and
above, elderly depression is not yet perceived as a public health problem in India. Very few community-based studies have
been conducted in India so far to address this issue. Aims of the study: To assess the depression among elderly population
attending Psychiatric OPD in a tertiary care hospital. Objectives: 1.To assess socio-demographic profile of elderly
population attending psychiatric OPD 2.To assess depression among elderly population attending psychiatric OPD at tertiary
care hospital Methodology: The study was conducted in the Psychiatry out-patient department of Tertiary Care Hospital,
Wardha district and a total of 103 consecutive patients, aged 60 years and above were enrolled according to duration method
sampling from May 2017 to June 2017 . The basic socio-demographic data were collected from the patient and the
prevalence of depressive features was assessed by Beck’s Depression Inventory (BDI). Results: In the present study about
54.4% subjects were in the age group of 66 to 70 years, 55.3% were male and 64.1% were Hindu by religion. On asking
about education 30.1% subjects were found to be illiterate followed by 39.8% educated up to primary. While, 49.5%
subjects were unemployed. The depression score showed that 49.5% were having moderate depression and 4.9% subjects
were having severe depression. Conclusion: Maximum study participants were in the age group of 66 to 70 years, Hindu by
religion and educated up to primary level, after applying Beck’s Depression Inventory Score, it was found that maximum
participants in the present study were belong to moderate depression followed by borderline clinical depression.
