Abstract : -The objective of the present study is to investigate the use of activated carbon (AC) obtained from the industrial waste lignin for the removal of benzoic acid (BA) from the aqueous solution. The lignin has been extracted from the nearby paper industrial waste (black liquor). The activated carbon was prepared from pyrolysis of lignin in N2 atmosphere using H3PO4 as an activating agent at 400 ºC. This activated carbon has been used for the adsorption of benzoic acid. The optimum conditions for BA removal were found to be pH= 3.5, contact time = 4 hrs. and adsorbent dose = 14 g/l of solution. The adsorption studied at 200-350 ppm concentration range of benzoic acid. The maximum amount of benzoic acid adsorbed by activated carbon prepared from industrial waste lignin was found to be 13.75 mg/g. The highest 96.25% uptake of BA was observed for 200 ppm concentration. The adsorption of BA on activated carbon found to be best represented by Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms. Keywords: Lignin, Activated carbon, Benzoic acid, Freundlich, Langmuir isotherms.
