Abstract : Purpose: This study aimed to identify factors influencing nicotine dependency among the college students intending to quit smoking on the basis of the PRECEDE model. Methods: A cross-sectional survey to analyze was used. The 58 current smokers who were enrolled in the Smoking Cessation Support Center in W city and G province in Korea were recruited from September 1 to November 30, 2015. Data was analyzed using a SPSS program for descriptive statistics, ANOVA, and hierarchical multiple regression. Results: In the effect of predisposing factors (Ages, Drinking Frequency), reinforcing factor (Smoking Culture) and enabling factor (An Allowance) among the subjects, general characteristics of Model 1 showed to explain 15.0% (Adj. R2) of nicotine dependency (F=5.252, p=.009). Model 2 with addition of smoking culture explained 25.9% of nicotine dependency (F=6.594, p=.001), improving 11.9% of explanatory power. Model 3 is the result of regression with addition of an allowance explained 35% and the explanatory power improved 9.9% more (F=7.458, p=.000) Conclusions: Differentiated supportive services based on economic status, drinking practices and cultural environments around smokers need to be developed for smoking cessation of college students.
