Abstract : The main aim of this study is to investigate the chemical oxygen demand (COD) and color removal from olive mill wastewater using combined acid cracking and coagulation-flocculation processes. Initially, acid cracking was performed in jar test with reaction time of 15 min and sedimentation time 2h at constant pH of 1.5 using hydrochloric acid (HCl). Afterwards, coagulation process was operated with rapid mixing (150 rpm) of 5 min and slow mixing (30 rpm) of 30 min at pH 4.0 to evaluate the effect of varying coagulant doses (1000-5000 mg Fe3+/L) on acid cracked effluents. Acid cracking and coagulation-flocculation performance were evaluated by measurement of COD, color and suspended solid (SS). Maximum COD and color (as Pt-Co) removal during combined acid cracking/coagulation-flocculation process were 52.59% and 28.52% at 5000 mg Fe3+/L concentration, respectively. As a result, combination of acid cracking and coagulationflocculation processes provided higher color, COD and suspended solid removal than alone acid cracking process. Keywords - Olive oil wastewater; coagulation; iron chloride; acid cracking; hydrochloric acid
