Prevalence and Associated Factors of Depression among HIV Positive Clients at Yekatit 12 Hospital Medical College, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Abstract
Depression is an important public health problem and one of the leading causes of disease burden worldwide.
Depression is one of the most common mental health disorders among people with HIV/AIDS affecting their daily living even
though, there is trace evidence. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and associated factors of depression among
HIV patients attending ART follow up at Yekatit 12 hospital medical college Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Institution based
cross-sectional study was conducted at Yekatit 12 hospital from January 1 to 30, 2017 among 2238 study population.
Systematic sampling technique was used to select the 416 participants. Logistic regression analysis with odds ratio and 95 %
CI was computed to assess the strength of associations on SPSS version 20 and p-value < 0.05 was considered as statistically
significant. In this study the prevalence of depression among HIV patients was 32.9 % (95%CI: 28.5-37.5%). Multivariate
analysis Showed that participants who had Age group 30-39 (AOR 2.036, 95%CI: (1.086-3.814)), history of hospital
admission (AOR 1.946, 95%CI :(1.146-3.304)), poor medication adherence (AOR 1.794 95% CI: (1.139-2.825)), family
history of mental illness (AOR 2.154 95% CI: (1.097-4.232)) and CD4 count <250 (AOR 2.558, 95%CI :(1.537-4.257)) were
significantly associated with depression. The prevalence of depression was high. Family history of mental illness, poor
medication adherence, history of hospital admission, age 30-39 & CD4<250 were associated with depression. Screening &
treatment mechanism of depression among HIV patients should be avail. Health providers should strengthen health education
and linking individual who need support and counseling.
