Abstract : In this paper the stress and temperature distribution of friction stir welding have been analysed by using numerical simulation. Several attributes of FSW were analysed such as tool-work piece surface interaction, plastic deformation, and friction-induced heat generation. A nonlinear redirect coupled-field study has been conducted to study the work piece's thermal and mechanical properties of the FSW process. Stresses, Temperature distribution and isotherms are obtained by giving input parameters viz. normal force, shoulder diameter, rotational speed, and feed to the tool. The results obtained from the simulation in ABAQUS software were validated with experimental results published by other researchers. It was noticed that peak temperature value during the welding was lesser dependent on the tool shoulder diameter than other parameters.
