Abstract : To evaluate the quality of the product, surface roughness can be one of the important factors. Thus, the purpose of this research is to optimize the surface roughness of a cylindrical piece on the live tooling lathe. This research operated turning and milling process on a CNC live tooling lathe for a 0.1-inch depth and 0.375-inch width slot on a cylindrical Aluminum 6061. To optimize the parameters for surface roughness from live tooling process, Taguchi methodology was implanted for investigating the impact of different parameter settings on surface roughness. In this research, 18 experimental runswere conducted based on theL9 orthogonal with one non-controllable factor. The optimal parameter setting combination for finishing milling were selected as feed rate – 6 (inch/min), tool spindle speed –1100 (rpm), depth of cut –0.025 inch and coolant is on. The process capability and process capability index were improved from 0.95 and 0.48 to 1.22 and 1.22. The average surface roughness improved from 12.8 (μin) to 10.5 (μin). Thus, this research has proven that the Taguchi methodology is a handy tool for improving the surface roughness as product’s quality. Keywords - Live Tooling, Taguchi, Surface Roughness, CNC Lathe.
