Abstract : The book is a window science and reading is the key. By reading, the one's knowledge and insight will continue to grow and also critical thinking skills will be more refined. But in reality, interest in reading, especially among students is still in the low status. Lack of interest in reading led to power student competition in is not increased. Most of students do not have the confidence and the spirit of competition because of the lack of insight. Interest in reading is a problem of students at present, which is a lack of interest in reading attractive to some students because they think without reading any of their ability, can be obtained. By reading can gain a broad knowledge, and also explore the world. The knowledge is gotten by reading will greatly assist a person in critical thinking. In fact, the lack of interest in reading this leads the students’ eager in competition becomes lower, because some of students feel not confident by their knowledge. Competition is supposed to be a chance to get knowledge by some students who do not eager for reading. This research is aims to: (1) describing the portrait of student interest in reading of students UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung (2) The effect of interest in reading to student’s achievement in debate of UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. This research is a quantitative approach to the student survey. The subject is the students of UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. A method of data collection in this research is using a questionnaire. Data were analyzed by using descriptive analysis, frequency and percentage tabulation. In this t research found that; (1) the time has interests in reading of UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung is low category, (2) the time in reading a book by students of UIN Sunan Gunung Djati is still relatively low, (3) the reason of students UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung visit or spending their time to the library is only to do their assignment, (4) the books are often read by students of UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung is a course book but they read it when there is a task only, (5) the effect of low interest in reading is make students not confidents in expressing their opinions, (6) the effect of the situation in class discussions is also very low. (7) The participation of students to the competition becomes less. Keywords- student, interest, reading, achievement, contest
