Abstract : The concept of drones dates back to the mid-1800s, when Austrians sent off unmanned, bomb-filled balloons as a way to attack Venice. The drones we see today evolved in the early 1900s, and were originally used for target practice to train military personnel. This paper presents the hardware implementation of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) capable of flying over surfaces at different altitudes as per the requirements of the user. The UAV will be capable of delivering small goods from one place to another, hence serving as an automated delivery machine. The main highlight of this UAV is the personalization feature which ensures security of goods in the aerial mode. A user programmable password is introduced to control the access to the users. Any user is allowed to start the UAV only for the correct password entry. The password can be entered for 5 times after which the user will not be able to access the UAV. This additional feature is implemented using a telephone keypad interfaced with the system through PIC18f452 microcontroller. Also, for security during the flight, the user is authenticated before deactivating the quad-copter with the same password as that for its activation. The password input is taken from the keypad and is displayed on a 20x4 LCD. This feature ensures the security of the designed UAV prior and post transportation. Wireless control of the aircraft is implemented using GFSK (Gaussian Frequency-Shift Keying) modulation scheme. The TMS 3637 transmitter/receiver module which utilizes the unlicensed frequency band of 2.4 GHz is the main component of the remote control unit and the PWM signals of 50Hz is generated to control the speed of the motors. The control of the aircraft is performed by KK board which contains the Atmega168PA microcontroller from the AVR family and the security system is controlled by PIC18F452 microcontroller. Keywords- Brushless DC Motor, KK Board, Pitch, Quad-Copter, Roll, Thrust, Yaw.
