Paper Title
Surface Modified Activated Carbon Composit: A Smart Futuristic Material For Chromium (VI) Abatement

Environmental pollution due to the indiscriminate disposal of heavy metals has been causing worldwide concern for the last few decades. In view of their toxicity, non-biodegradability and persistent nature their removal becomes an absolute necessity. Hexavalent chromium metal is one of the carcinogenic pollutant in the environment and is frequently present in wastewater from various industrial units. The present research article reports the characterization and use of chitosan-coated activated carbon derived from the bark of Tamarindus indica (CCTIAC) as a potential adsorbent after for removal of hexavalent chromium from aqueous solution. The experiment was conducted employing batch adsorption system. The influence of different experimental parameters such as effect of pH, contact time, adsorbent dosage and initial Cr(VI) ion concentration were evaluated. The maximum adsorption of Cr(VI) on adsorbent was found at pH value of 5.5. The removal of hexavalent chromium from aqueous solution increases with increase in contact time and equilibrium was attained at 180 min. Further on increasing adsorbent dose, there was increase of Cr(VI) removal. The optimum adsorption (88.50%) was noticed at 6.0 g/l of adsorbent dose. The increase in initial concentration of Cr(VI) led to decrease in the percentage of removal of Cr(VI). This investigation verifies that the newly prepared CCTIAC can be used as a cost effective, valuable adsorbent for removal of hexavalent chromium from aqueous solution and thus can be successfully applied for waste water treatment. Keywords- Adsorption, Bio-Sorbent, Chitosan, Hexavalent Chromium, Tamarindus Indica Bark.
